POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer serves as the company’s lead technical individual contributor in their area, responsible for managing Power Electronics research and development projects. They have a big-picture view as they work on central, critical technical designs, using hands-on engineering expertise and initiative to solve challenging problems.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of:
    • physical power electronics
    • circuit behavior and analysis
    • conversion from digital current (DC) to alternating current (AC)
    • power semiconductor composition
    • power electronic driver circuits, including switching and modulation technique
  • Advanced electronics design skills
  • Demonstrated experience and technical background in developing inverter systems with unique characteristics, such as low noise inverters
  • Ability to design integrated gate bi-polar transistors (IGBT’s) for varied purposes, including semiconductors
  • Ability to apply IGBT’s for varied purposes, including semiconductors
  • Ability to use PCB (printed circuit board) software tools, such as PAD
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. without restriction 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design

  • Design and document the circuits to meet the specifications of a power inverters
  • Apply techniques and tools to improve cost, design time, reliability and manufacturability
  • Develop DC to AC inverter drivers that maximize efficiency and reliability
  • Create electrical schematics using software design tools
  • Design electrical and mechanical elements o0f custom magnetics, including core, wire and selection
  • Work with semiconductor suppliers to generate custom reference designs

Evaluation and Testing

  • Use analysis, simulations and/or measurements to demonstrate how the requirements are met
    • Author the verification test plans
    • Build and test lab prototype driver boards
    • Review and evaluate electrical and thermal data
    • Write verification and qualification test plans to ensure that lifetime and quality targets are met through design and component selection
    • Perform electrical and loss analysis
  • Management of electronic design processes and support
  • Manage the schematic capture and Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Manage PCB critical part placement process
    • Evaluate electronics component suppliers

Collaboration

  • Provide work direction and guidance for PCB designers
  • Collaborate with engineers/technicians to ensure the design meets the specifications for each stage of development
  • Collaborate with PCB designer to produce robust, manufacturable board designs that meet all applicable standards
  • Collaborate with suppliers to deliver cost effective production solutions
  • Integrate with manufacturing by developing production test fixtures/production test procedures and participating in pilot builds
  • Provide senior technical knowledge for energy storage, DC load panel and other related issues
